Boat trips to Lundy Island depart from the harbour at Bideford (8 miles) a thriving market town also home to Atlantic Village a glazed mall of over 35 stores. And no Devon holiday would be complete without a trip to Clovelly a gloriously picturesque village of colourful old cottages where donkeys and sledges are the only means of transport on narrow cobbled streets winding down to its tiny ancient harbour. Also within easy reach are Bude's famous surfing sands Westward Ho! and Barnstaple from where visitors can take a Tarka Line train to the lovely cathedral city of Exeter or pick up a bicyle from the station and pedal the Tarka Trail. Further afield to the north are the fabulous beaches at Saunton Sands Croyde Bay (another favourite with surfers) and Woolacombe Bay's legendary mile of golden sands. Great days out can be enjoyed at the Eden Project (11/2 hours' drive) and in the outstanding natural beauty of the Dartmoor and Exmoor National Parks. The Dartington Glass factory at Great Torrington is well worth a visit and the nearby Big Sheep and the Milky Way Adventure Park are always popular with children. Riding golf and fishing are all available locally and for the sailing enthusiast Tamar Lakes provide a wonderful setting.
