St Martin le Herbert within easy reach of the channel port of Cherbourg 21 km is on the Cotentin Peninsula which offers beautiful countryside and beaches often by-passed by travellers hurtling their way south. Towns like St M re- glise 30 km and St Martin-de-Varreville 33 km were witness to the Battle for Normandy in June 1944 and like the beaches which lie to the east make for an interesting but poignant day out. The long sandy beaches to the west are great for families the closest of which is 16 km. Barneville-Carteret 23 km is an exceptional spot sheltered as it is by the cap de Carteret opposite Jersey it is great for water sports and discovering of the region's heritage and local produce.
